Stiff neck
If people can only move or turn their head to a limited extent, this is described as a stiff neck. Affected people are no longer able to turn their heads, but have to turn their entire body in the desired direction. Some just have limited movement, others experience pain as well. The symptoms can be acute or chronic lifebloombeauty.
Stiff neck - the most important facts
A stiff neck is extremely uncomfortable for those affected and, in the
worst case, can be due to serious causes, which is why a medical examination
should be carried out promptly in the event of certain accompanying symptoms or
persistent complaints. However, the following article deals only with
those complaints of a functional nature that do not constitute a medical
emergency. First the most important facts in advance futuretechexpert

Symptoms and discomfort with a stiff neck
With an acute stiff neck, for example, those affected get up in the
morning and complain of restricted mobility and pain. The pain can move
from the head to the shoulders or between the shoulder blades or there is a
painful point in the transition between neck and shoulder or sometimes on the
side of the second cervical vertebra, which causes increased discomfort when
the head is turned techsmartinfo .
Causes of a stiff neck
Most manual approaches assume that overloading of a meniscus of the
cervical spine joints may result. These are very sensitive and could also
explain localized pain in the cervical spine. The pulling pains are
explained by a hard tension of the trapezius muscle. Overloads from
prolonged holding and bending of the cervical spine, possibly from computer,
laboratory or desk work, can also lead to the problem. Particularly
noticeable here is the phenomenon of so-called “mobile phone cracking”, which
can be traced back to intensive smartphone use with the corresponding incorrect
posture. The German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery eV
(DGOOC) has already pointed out the increased occurrence of such complaints smarttechpros.
When looking at the cell phone, the head is usually tilted forward by
over 45 degrees, so that forces of more than 20 kilograms act, reports the
DGOOC. If this posture is taken often and for a long time, this leads to
extreme strain on muscles, tendons and intervertebral discs and the cervical
spine is overloaded. This could lead to permanent muscle hardening and a
relieving posture. In turn, such muscle hardening is considered to be a
possible cause of a stiff neck.
According to the Fascial Distortion Model (FDM),
which is strongly based on body language, the pain between the neck and
shoulder is caused by a piece of tissue that has passed through the surrounding
tissue, the fascia. In the chronic stiff neck, the pulling pains or
blockages felt by those affected are explained by chronic twisting of the
fascia or adhesions.
However, metabolic processes may also play a role that should not be
underestimated in a stiff neck. A Japanese study from
2018 came to the conclusion that there is a connection between neck symptoms
and LDL cholesterol levels. Associations with metabolic syndrome and
obesity have also been demonstrated in previous studies.
Treatment for a stiff neck
In most cases, the symptoms go away over time, even without
treatment. However, various accompanying measures can support the healing
process and provide rapid relief from the symptoms. First and foremost,
manual therapies such as Rolfing, osteopathy or classic massages should be
mentioned.
Many sufferers massage the painful point themselves and feel some relief
afterwards. Turning the head may also be made easier as a result. The
FDM takes advantage of this and tries to reduce the point by applying strong
thumb pressure. The pulling pains between the shoulder and head are also
treated with the thumb along the painful path.
Methods such as Rolfing or
osteopathy go beyond the painful area on the neck and consider the entire body,
including its tension distribution and statics. An economical posture and
tension should help the organism to regain its balance.
In chiropractic, the pain in the vertebrae is seen as a blockage and
should be released and made free of movement by an impulse at high speed
(manipulation). In a massage, the hardened muscles are supposed to be
loosened and blood flowed better. This should allow normal movement again.
In neural therapy, local anesthetics are specifically injected onto
individual pain points, which should reduce the pain stimulus and restore
physiological movement.
